Hi, I'm new here and English isn't my first language ;-). I hope you understand my problem.
I installed a new computer. He should be a copy of an older one. To save work I copied large parts of ~/.config. I noticed the following effect too late and now I can't find the error:
The monitor is 1920x1080px. But all symbols (folders, files or links) that are generated automatically are about 100 px away from the right edge. I can't get them any closer either. A window in full screen ends at the same place on the right, the application finder (Alt-F2) is also shifted about 100 px to the left. That means the "virtual" desktop is only about 1800x1080 px!
I created a second user for testing - everything works with it, the effect does not occur. So there must be an error in my user's Xfce setup, because X11 is the same for both.
I look forward to tips and ideas! Thanks in advance.
Ralph

Hello and welcome.
Go to Settings Manager > Display and see if you can change the resolution. If not, then perhaps your graphics card isn't set up properly.

Also check Settings>Workspaces>Margins

There is 1920x1080 set, it is the highest possible entry besides all others. It is corresponding with the monitor.

What about monitor settings from the monitor as well? You might be able to adjust the Image size and/or H/V position. There should be a menu button of sorts on the monitor. What is the make and model of the monitor?

It is al Samsung 23" 16:9 with 1920x1080px. Its settings are okay.
A displayed circle is a circle, really, and not an egg :-).
And, btw, with another user on the same system and of course it's own setup (~/.config/) all is well. It must be a difference in some config file or anywhere else.
I tried rename ~/.config to ~/.config.bak - of course all my settings were lost, but the misrepresentation was still there. I have no more idea...

A bit of a wild stab in the dark... try deleting your sessions cache. Delete the contents of ~/.cache/sessions while not logged into Xfce (Ctrl+Alt+F2 before logging in).

Very dark, indeed :-). No, it doesn't work...

And, btw, with another user on the same system and of course it's own setup (~/.config/) all is well. It must be a difference in some config file or anywhere else.
One more thing to try. First reboot. Then before you log in, go to Ctrl+Alt+F2, log in to the virtual console, and delete the ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml file.
Then log into Xfce, the displays.xml file will be re-created, and see if that makes a difference.

I deleted the file, restarted and the effect was still there. No change.
The monitor is Samsung LS24F350.
I am now preparing a new account. This is tedious, but the error can probably not be found... What a pity! But I need a perfectly working machine.
Thank You very much for Your effort :-).

can you do a screen capture to a file? what is the geometry of the file you get? do you see the same background at the edges you cannot access when displaying this file?

The screenshot image file is 1920x1080 and I see the complete background. The "narrower" desktop is not real, only full-screen mode and moving symbols to the right edge don't work.
I surrendered. 2 days of work to transform all to a new user end nearly all is okay.
Thanks!

if you still have the old user and all his files, you can run a cross comparison between the files of these two users and see what is different. all the files with username or number in them would be expected to be different. anything neglected to be copied from old to new will be different, as well (you might need to copy this over).
this does seem to be a case of something, perhaps Xfce itself, using different size info than the video driver mode. but i wonder, in that case, why no skewed lines since the offset between lines would be different. do you see any size info in environment variables that is different?

I have the old user on this machine and the same old user on the old machine (with the same graphic adapter!) - I did compare all files in .config and the was no difference.
Now I work as a new user, it was much effort to copy and adapt all, and now all is working fine.
Thanks to all helpers!

did you compare all the permission bits? if something cannot be accessed because of not permitted that could have a different effect.
