Desktop not usable after upgrading to 4.16

Hello,

Looking for help.

I'm using FreeBSD 13.1 on a ThinkPad T430 laptop. I upgraded xfce and many other packages by running #pkg upgrade couple of days ago. Now when I launch into xfce, almost everything is screwed and the DE is barely usable:
Mouse is lost - I manage to get an "X" shape mouse by opening "Applications" -> "Settings" - "Mouse and TouchPad"
Plank dock lost
desktop icons lost
A new application window will be on top of previous one and I can't minimize it or hide it
Maximize, minimize and close buttons, all disappeared from the application window frame
I can't toggle between different application windows
And a lot more...

Not sure if it is related, but in the background console(Ctl-Alt-F1), there is:
(xfwm4: 1416): GTK-error: ... The program 'xfwm4' received an X Window System error
...
This error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'.
(Details: serial 2417 error_code 9 request_code 155 (NV-GLX) minor_code 4)
...

There are also other Gtk-CRITICAL messages printed.

Many thanks.

xfwm4 is crashing.

Depending on which programs are throwing the Gtk-Critical messages, there maybe other applications that are crashing as well.

This is typical in an "upgrade went wrong" scenario. Are you sure the upgrade completed successfully? Have you rebooted since?

xfdesktop: GTK-CRITICAL...
...
xfdesktop: Glib-GObject-CRITICAL...
...

Also remmina, plank...

It didn't report upgrade error, all went ok.

Re: Desktop not usable after upgrading to 4.16

Try getting xfdesktop debug output:

xfdesktop -Q && xfdesktop -e

Try creating a secondary user and logging in with that user account - does the same happen?

Do you have an nvidia card? If so, have you tried re-installing and/or re-configuring the drivers?

Hi, removing and reinstalling the nvidia driver did the trick. Thanks a lot.

Care to explain?

Re: Desktop not usable after upgrading to 4.16

The error messages you were getting were related to X windows (not Xfce). In past experience, I've seen this with upgrades gone bad (e.g. library mismatches), or video drivers (especially nvidia) having issues. Glad to hear its sorted out.
