Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

My custom keyboard shortcuts are no longer working. The settings files still have them.

For example, I have associated Ctrl+Alt+Super with opening the whisker menu. It does nothing, but the configuration is still there. However, I can open the whisker menu with:

> xdotool key Ctrl+Alt+Super

It works! (this does not work in other questions, I have found a handful of information on the Internet, none of which seems to apply to my case).

Perhaps not coincidentally, I am having issues with the audio in the 3.5mm jack too. I have to set the volume to maximum just to make it audible, and by doing so any white noise increases in volume too. The 3.5mm jack has always had white noise, but most people will not notice it unless when playing a silence audio file, and setting the volume to maximum (as I am doing).
I get a handful of warnings with xfce4-volumed:

> xfce4-volumed

...

** (xfce4-volumed:11486): WARNING **: 11:11:57.249: Binding '<Ctrl><Alt><Super>XF86AudioMute' failed!

If I check the x-session errors:

> cat ~/.xsession-errors

...

(thunar-volman:12718): dbind-WARNING **: 11:25:38.044: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus:
Failed to connect to socket /root/.cache/at-spi/bus_0.0: Permission denied thunar-volman:

(thunar-volman:12726): dbind-WARNING **: 11:25:38.134: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus:
Failed to connect to socket /root/.cache/at-spi/bus_0.0: Permission denied thunar-volman:

(pavucontrol:13127): dbind-WARNING **: 11:35:54.151: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus:
Failed to connect to socket /root/.cache/at-spi/bus_0.0: Permission denied

Finally:

  1. Bluetooth headset works properly.

  2. I can adjust the volume with its buttons.

  3. That does not seem to be the "master" volume but application-dependent, but at this point I am confused.

  4. My keyboard has a wheel to adjust the master volume, it is still effective, but negligible (similar to the problems with the 3.5mm jack). That seems to be the "master" volume.

  5. > pavucontrol
    1. Output devices (tab) volume has no impact (on anything), this is what I consider the "master" volume.

    2. Playback tab shows applications and where the audioStream is going to (e.g. bluetooth headset). Setting the volume here is effective.

Hopefully this is not a hard question. The situation is very confusing for me, TBH.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

Lets tackle the keyboard shortcuts not working issue first.
Which version of Xfce?

Is the xfce4-settings process still running? Does running:

xfsettingsd --replace

...fix the issue?

Can you post back the full content of your ~/.xsession-errors log file?

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

I thought I had tried everything yesterday. Apparently, I could still reboot again. Now:

  1. the sound is back, and

  2. the whisker menu is more fun:

    1. Ctrl+Alt+Super L makes the menu pop, for a fraction of a second

    2. Then the cursor changes to a cross, which seems to close windows when clicking on them. I am guessing the key chord is bound twice (could not find where, though).

  3. The version is upgraded

    # aptitude show xfdesktop4
    Package: xfdesktop4
    Version: 4.16.0-1
    State: installed
    Automatically installed: no
  4. > xfsettingsd --replace
    1. It produces no output and I have to kill the process because it does not terminate.

    2. It does not seem to do anything, but it does something.

    3. If I run it as root, the look and feel of the windows manager changes, and it is restored when I run the command as my user.

  5. # ps -e | grep xfce4-settings

    produces no output.

  6. > cat ~/.xsession-errors

Do any of the following commands return anything:

xfconf-query -c xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts -lv | grep xkill
fgrep -ri xkill ~/.config/autostart
cat ~/.xbindkeysrs | grep xkill

If I run it as root, the look and feel of the windows manager changes, and it is restored when I run the command as my user.

Its not meant to be run as root - only run it as regular user.

From your ~/.xsession-errors log file:

xkill: unable to grab cursor
xkill: unable to grab cursor
xkill: unable to grab cursor

...something is calling xkill.

Only the first one:

> xfconf-query -c xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts -lv | grep xkill
/commands/custom/<Primary><Alt>Escape xkill
/commands/default/<Primary><Alt>Escape xkill

The other files do not exist.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

Do you have xcape installed? Is it bound to a hotkey?

xfconf-query -c xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts -lv | grep xcape

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

No, no output from that command.

PD: there are two locations for configuration:

  1. Settings Manager > Keyboard > Application shortcuts

  2. Settings Editor > xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts

The latter does not seem very effective, most shortcuts do nothing. I have removed references to xkill there. Now, the whisker menu still appears for a fraction of a second, but at least I am not closing windows after that. If I keep trying, occasionally the whisker menu stays open, it normally takes between 5 and 10 attempts to achieve.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

Interesting. Something is running xkill and its somehow mapped to your shortcut. I'm not sure what it is though. If you don't use xkill, maybe you could uninstall it?

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

Ah, I added a PD to the previous post, but I repeat here:

PD: there are two locations for configuration:

  1. Settings Manager > Keyboard > Application shortcuts

  2. Settings Editor > xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts

The latter does not seem very effective, most shortcuts do nothing. I have removed references to xkill there. If I keep trying, occasionally the whisker menu stays open, it normally takes between 5 and 10 attempts to achieve.

xkill was mapped to <Super>Esc, now it seems to not be mapped to anything (I do not get the cursor as an 'x' that will kill any window), but still the whisker menu does not behave properly.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

Out of frustration, I have added the shortcut to <Ctrl>+<Super L>+Z, and it works perfectly like that.

I have gone through the errors and I see no mention of xkill.

At some point, the behavior of <Super L> changed:

  1. Before:

    1. Linking only <Super L> to the whisker menu would not allow using <Super L> for other keyboard configurations

      • For example <Super L>+E opens Thunar for me.

      • I had to map <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Super L>, which has been my configuration for years.

  2. Now:

    1. I can get the whisker menu if I press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Super L> and I do not release it.

      • This may be related with the "sticky keys" configuration.

    2. If I configure the whisker menu to use <Super L> only

      • I get the same behavior: I have to keep it pressed for a while, or the menu leaves.

      • I can still open Thunar with <Super L>+E, but then the whisker menu stays on the screen.

Now I am getting the following errors:

I see two main conflicts:

  1. pulseaudio with volumed

  2. xfce4-screensaver with something

Currently, everything works. I just have the feeling that this will come to bite me in the ass at some point in the future, or perhaps I will do a dist-upgrade first. ?

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

There must have been a change then but I'm unaware of what that would be. The problem with using just modifier keys as shortcuts is that they will double execute like you are experiencing (the shortcut for the modifier + the shortcut for any modifier + key). Thats why its recommended to use something like xcape if you want to use a modifier key only for a shortcut.

When you say "before" and "after", what versions of Xfce are you referring to?

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not binding. Volume, I can't even...

Before and after are possibly the same xfce version. I am not sure about what changed, I just updated everything without looking much into it:

aptitude update ; aptitude -y safe-upgrade

Should be safe, but seeing that some things broke, I doubled down on it with a dist-upgrade. Now everything is in a fairly confusing state.

I was hoping this would be easy to fix, but I will be repurposing this PC and reinstalling everything from scratch in January anyway, so I guess investing more time in this at this point is unwise.

Thank you very much for all your help. I will keep the pointers to files and tools for the next time I need to diagnose some similar problem.
