PulseAudio never has worked on my machine so I've ignored it, but the latest version of Firefox seems to need it. Not sure where to start, I've reinstalled it with no effect (Debian). 'Applications > Multimedia > PulseAudio Volume Control' shows: "Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please Wait" ... but nothing happens. Reinstalled xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin but no improvement. I don't know if this is an Xfce4 issue at all, but maybe someone here has some ideas.
FWIW here's what firefox reports:
8 /opt/firefox 0 $ firefox

... that's the latest Firefox (104.0.2) whereas my old Firefox (91.11esr) has no problems with sound.

Pulseaudio isn't a part of Xfce source. Here is the Debian pulseaudio page - it has some troubleshooting steps.

Ok, seems Xfce is in the clear on this, the 'settings ....' thing just calls pavucontrol which doesn't work from CLI either, so you're off the hook. But, nuts, every browser works except the Firefox upgrade.
