How does xfce-terminal "know" to display Emoji?

Hi,

I have xfce-terminal with a regular DejaVu font.
I've also installed fonts-noto-color-emoji for emoji support.

It's understandable that if the font is set to noto then the terminal will show only emojis since every char code now points to an emoji.
But it can display both DejaVu chars & emojis together:

How is this possible?.

Is it possible to mix any number of fonts?.
