open aplications on/over terminal from which they were launched

If I open, say my editor from a terminal, the editor might open almost anywhere, sometimes it seems to seek any existing instance of the editor that's already open and open the new instance on top of the old one, but often it seems it will open in a random location.  Can this be controlled?  Even just assuring that it will open on the same monitor would be good.
