Power Manager? Can't shutdown or suspend (RESOLVED)

(I'm basically copying my message from here, as it was recommended to try this forum first: https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-powe … issues/172 )

I started having issues while using a clean install of Xubuntu 22.04 - at first it worked fine, but then started having issues. Occasionally I could shut down or suspend, but most of the time it would either just not do anything, or the screen would go blank but I couldn't wake the screen back up, though it was obviously still running (could SSH back in, everything was still operating, just no display).

Updated (clean install, but not my profile) to 22.10, and it seemed like it was working for a couple of days, but now it's doing the same thing.

I'm not sure where to even start debugging this - what can I give you to help figure out what the problem is?

Thank you!

Re: Power Manager? Can't shutdown or suspend (RESOLVED)

Hello and welcome.

Lets give this a try. First we will need some basic info about your system (make, model, video card, video driver) as well as some log files. When the problem happens, can you post back the contents of ~/.xsession-errors and the output of:

sudo journalctl -b --no-pager

You might also be able to get distro-specific advice from ubuntuforums.org.

Re: Power Manager? Can't shutdown or suspend (RESOLVED)

Happened again last night, so did journalctl with boot=-1 because I had shut down. Copied everything up to some entries that were obviously well before the attempted sleep, let me know if you need more. I'll put specs in the next message.

.xsesson-errors only shows this morning's log after booting, I'll try to get that the next time it happens before I shut it down.

Nov 08 17:31:38 solanus kernel: amdgpu 0000:0b:00.0: Refused to change power state from D0 to D3hot

Looks like a video driver or kernel issue. Which kernel version are you running? Are you able to upgrade (or downgrade given that it used to work) kernel versions to test? Might be useful to create a launchpad bug report against amdgpu or the kernel.

Re: Power Manager? Can't shutdown or suspend (RESOLVED)

I've tried upgrading and downgrading, and unfortunately haven't had any real success with those. Since I wasn't really aware of it until a while after an upgrade, and thought it was just a quirky thing for a while, I'm not sure what kernel last worked.

I'll look into those options. Thank you for being responsive and helpful!

Re: Power Manager? Can't shutdown or suspend (RESOLVED)

I'll go out on a limb here but. I think it's a permissions issue.  I had the problem once, a long time ago, and I'll be darned if I can remember how I resolved it.
I don't believe it is the kernel or video card, just a permissions issue.-

As an addendum, perhaps

file:///usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.xfce.power.policy

might be of assistance.

Re: Power Manager? Can't shutdown or suspend (RESOLVED)

Ok, so to do good followup, and for posterity, I'm posting my solution here.

Thanks to @ToZ and @herbie643 I looked more into kernel / video problems, settings, etc. and broadened my searches.

I finally landed on this article, which indicated the problem might actually be my mobo bios. Since I hadn't updated the bios, and the problem started happening out of the blue (probably after a kernel update, but who knows?) it didn't occur to me that it would be resolved by a bios update. Should have thought of trying it at least. (It's been so long, but I think I may have done so originally and it didn't help that I didn't think to do it again. But I've tried so many things...)

Anyway, very long story short, it seems to be working after a bios update. Every time, it feels like a miracle. It's so nice.

Well, it does actually take over 30sec to suspend, but I'll take that any day over not suspending at all!
