lack of sound from terminal

i am running Xubuntu 20.04 freshly installed (not an upgrade from an earlier version) with Xfce 4.14.

there is no sound from terminal sessions when i expect there to be, which is whenever the ASCII bell character is output, such as with the bash command

echo -n $'\a'

i have checked, using pavucontrol, that everything has 100% volume setting and nothing is muted.  i cannot find any options in the xfce4-terminal man page that mention "audio", "bell", or "sound".  in Settings >> Appearance >> Settings >> Event Sounds i have "Enable event sounds" check marked.

sound generally works on this system.  playing videos on YouTube works just fine, so i know Firefox can play sound.  more tech info:

this link made me realize that i have no terminalrc file.  reviewing the man page, again, i now see there is no description of the form or syntax of this file.  the linked post mentions "enabled bell" which i now wonder if i need.  so i think i need documentation on this, too.

The terminalrc file should exist in ~/.config/xfce4/terminal.

However, in the development branch, xfce4-terminal has migrated to xfconf - so its settings would b saved there and not in a terminalrc file anymore. Which version of xfce4-terminal are you running?

Which version of xfce4-terminal are you running?

What does the following return:

ls ~/.config/xfce4/terminal

...and:

xfconf-query -c xfce4-terminal -lv

The first command is supposed to be ls; please show us the listing of that directory.
