For the past four years I ran the git master branches of all XFCE components, without much trouble if I remember correctly.
A few days ago I switched the git branch from "master" to "xfce-4.18" in the repositories where such branch actually exists. Simply because one of the core components started to require a newer glib2 version, which I do not have at the moment.
Earlier this week I noticed that applications such as NetworkManager, KeepassXC, VLC, Remmina and whatever else used to place itself automatically into the upper right corner are not shown anymore. I looked through the available panel objects for some "container" item where such icons are supposed to be shown as required. But I found nothing obvious.
From the git commit messages for xfce4-panel and the like I do not remember any specific config format change or the like between the time the xfce-4.18 branches where forked vs. the master branches from a few days ago.
So to me it is not clear why (and when) those icons disappeared, I did not pay attention to that detail.
Does anyone know what configuration knobs need to be tweaked to show these application icons? I guess it works for everyone else in their XFCE 4.18 environment.

If you've built xfce4-panel 4.18, you should have a "Status Tray Plugin" available to add to the panel. This now supports both systray and status notifiers.

Thank you. This item was lost. No idea why. Also the name does not make it obvious, the text in the list of available objects is truncated. The translation is bogus, the leading "Bietet Elemente für " could be safely removed. Luckily the selection window can be resized manually.
