Hello!
XFCE intercepts shortcut some Ctrl-Shift keys, which prevents unicode codes from being typed. In particular, when you enter the code UA7 (§) in xfce terminal the search window falls out. When you enter the code U1D11E (?), garbage comes out.

I can't reproduce it on Ubuntu LTS. What distribution are you using? Could you also please post back the output of locale?
