today, the workspace selector quit working. good thing i had keyboard shortcuts to run wmctrl to change workspace, which still worked. it was only mouse clicks that highlighted the little workspace box when hovering but did not change workspace when clicked. only one user is affected (the one i post on forums with). any suggestions what i should look more closely at to determine the problem cause?

Anything in the log files (e.g. ~/.xsession-errors) when this happened?

that content looks like what i usually get. i do have some dated log files that have more interesting content. the tail end of file 20230321-183611-911841629-forums-xsessionrc.log has:
(xfdesktop:6708): GLib-CRITICAL **: 15:16:03.768: g_variant_new_string: assertion 'string != NULL' failed
Working directory "/home/forums/[Invalid UTF-8]" does not exist. It won't be used when spawning "/usr/host/bin/ws".ATTENTION: default value of option mesa_glthread overridden by environment.

/usr/host/bin/ws is my own script in Python3 to show or change the current workspace. the script works despite these messages.

Interesting. It looks like xfdesktop crashed.
Is the workspace selector working again? Are you able to replicate the issue on demand?

it works on every user. but i have rebooted. when i had the problem it affected only one user (user forums). other users could still click on the workspace box and it would go there. if this means works be sending a message to something other than what wmctrl does then i can believe that something other crashed.
