External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

Hello,

I have been using Manjaro with XFCE on my laptop for a while now.
I configured the Power Manager settings to suspend the laptop when the lid is closed, both for "on battery" and "plugged in" modes.

Recently, I've encountered a strange issue where I am unable to use my external monitor (which is set as my primary display) after closing the laptop's lid. The system suspends, and when I wake it up using the keyboard or mouse, I am left with a black screen on my external monitor.

Although I am able to switch to TTYs using the ctrl+alt+Fxxx key combinations and access the console, type any commands I want etc, I cannot return to the XFCE login graphical dialogue.

I attempted to disable the notebook's display in the settings, leaving only the external monitor, but it had no effect.

When I physically open the closed lid, the issue disappears, and both my displays (external monitor and laptop's display) become active again.

Can you please assist me in resolving this issue? Please let me know if you require any additional details, and I would be happy to provide them.

My specs below:

uname -r

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

Try running xfsettingsd in debug mode:

XFSETTINGSD_DEBUG=1 xfsettingsd --replace --no-daemon

...then close the lid to suspend the system. Wait one minute and wake it up via mouse/keyboard. Open the lid to recover the system and post back the debug output.

Also of interest would be:

journalctl --user -b --no-pager

As well as:

xfconf-query -c displays -lv

Recently, I've encountered a strange issue...

Do you know exactly when and what packages were upgraded at this time?

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

For the xfsettingsd debug output, was this all there was throughout your test? If so:

xfsettingsd: Another instance took over. Leaving...

...is really odd. Do you have something that restarts xfsettingsd at any point in time?

For the xfconf-query output, it lists 2 external Dell monitors (DP-1 and DP-2). Do you have two, or is it just one?

I would suggest the following further diagnostic tests:

  1. Create a secondary test account and set up the displays/screen lock/etc as similar as possible. Does the problem replicate in this account as well?
    .

  2. Restart the computer and before you log in, go to a virtual console (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F2). From there, log in and navigate to ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml and rename the "displays.xml" file. Log back in to the GUI and re-create your monitor setups and see if this makes a difference

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

I only have one external monitor, which is a Dell.

Do you have something that restarts xfsettingsd at any point in time?

I apologize, but could you please guide me on how to check this?

I will share the diagnostic results with you later. Thank you for your time.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

As for the first diagnostic step, I can confirm that the issue is reproducible under a secondary account.

Here's an output of `XFSETTINGSD_DEBUG=1 xfsettingsd --replace --no-daemon`:

I checked the output of 'xfconf-query' under the second user account, and it listed only one external monitor. This suggests that something is wrong with the 'displays.xml' file for the first user account, but I'm not sure if it's related to the issue.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

Can you provide versions of xfce4-settings and xfce4-session?

Could you tell me if there's something suspicious please? Maybe you need other details? Thanks.

I have a temporary workaround, but I dislike what it does:

edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf

Uncomment the following:

LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=yes
HandleLidSwitch=ignore

edit /etc/UPower/UPower.conf
set IgnoreLid=true

because the laptop's screen remains active and consumes electricity.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

I don't see anything in that log file that is helpful. And your workaround is to not suspend.

Can you post back the following:

ps -ef | grep -E 'lock|save'

...perhaps you have a second screensaver running (a bit of a long shot).

Can you also let logind handle the lid switch (and not the power manager):

xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p /xfce4-power-manager/logind-handle-lid-switch -s true

...see if the power manager is interfering.

And can you also post your Xorg.0.log file after an unsuccessful resume?

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

By the way, after I executed this command, the laptop didn't go to sleep (in my humble opinion) because even though the lid has been closed, the red light on it continued to remain steady (it should have been blinking slowly in case of suspend or hibernate, if I am correct).

The above Xorg.0.log output is the result after I executed your console command as you requested.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

There's just nothing in the log files that helps.

After running the xfconf-query command, edit the /etc/logind.conf file, and uncomment the "#HandleLidSwitch=suspend" to read:

HandleLidSwitch=suspend

...then restart your system. See if that makes a difference.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

It seems now it doesn't suspend (the red light on the laptop's lid still stays on even when it is closed) and I couldn't see any difference.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

Hmmm. Maybe on the wrong track.

Comment back the line in logind.conf and run:

xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p /xfce4-power-manager/logind-handle-lid-switch -s false

...to return your system to the previous state.

As a test, uninstall light-locker and install instead either xscreensaver or xfce4-screensaver to see if you can replicate the problem using them.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

Thank you, ToZ.

I followed your suggestion and removed light-locker, then installed xfce4-screensaver. It seems to have done the trick, as now I can use my external monitor when I close the laptop lid and wake it up from suspend using the keyboard or mouse.

However I'm not certain about the other option "Switch off display" for "When laptop lid is closed." Here's what happens on my end: when I close the lid and move the mouse or use the keyboard, the laptop wakes up, and the external monitor is activated again, which is good. But I'm not sure if the laptop's display has actually been switched off. When I take a screenshot (using the xfce4-screenshooter app), it still shows both displays as if nothing happened to the laptop's screen. I expected the image to only display the external monitor's screen...

Could you please let me know if it's working as intended or if there might be some misbehavior? Thanks a lot!

Nice. That means that there is some sort of bug with light-locker.

However I'm not certain about the other option "Switch off display" for "When laptop lid is closed." As far as I am aware, the "Do Nothing" settings simply prevents the laptop from suspending, shutting down, etc. I don't believe it effects the display itself. In fact, on my system it doesn't. What I do to deal with this is I go to Settings > Display, and create 2 profiles:

  1. The default profile with both the laptop and external monitor enabled and set up as I want. I then go to the Advanced tab and save this profile

  2. I then disable the laptop monitor in the same settings dialog (ensuring that the panel is displayed on the Primary output (Settings Manager > Panel), and when that looks good, I create another profile called something like ExternalOnly.

I also have "xfce4-display-settings -m" mapped to a keyboard shortcut.

When I close the lid, I press the shortcut and select the "ExternalOnly" profile.

Re: External monitor not showing login GUI after laptop suspends/wakes up

As far as I am aware, the "Do Nothing" settings simply prevents the laptop from suspending, shutting down, etc

Now I am a bit confused because I was talking about the "Switch Off Display" settings.

When I close the lid, I press the shortcut and select the "ExternalOnly" profile.

Ha! Will check it out if it works for my scenario! Thanks for providing your experience.

ToZ
Your suggested approach works for me. I've specified a keyboard shortcut the way you explained :-)
Thank you.
