[Solved] Lag opening Thunar w/ side pane set to tree.

Some distros have a lag opening Thunar when side pane is set to tree, but only the first time. Subsequent openings are fine. It's like a data base needs to be built with every restart of the computer. The lag can be 4 to 10 seconds at the worst I've seen. Turn off the tree view and the issue goes away.

Some spins that doesn't happen, like newly released Xbntu Minimal. Link

What could Xbutu be doing that some others aren't?

Some searches turned up things like, get rid of xdg-desktop-portal. Well, I don't care about Snap or Flatpack so that would be okay; but it doesn't make a difference for me.

TIA.

See: https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/-/issues/659. This was fixed in version 4.17.7.

Re: [Solved] Lag opening Thunar w/ side pane set to tree.

Thanks for the reply.

I have several Xfce 4.18 installs that still do it.

The system in the screenshot thread does it; just timed it, 11.6 sec.

Re: [Solved] Lag opening Thunar w/ side pane set to tree.

Xebian Bookworm 161 files, 0.9GB. Recent emptied, reboot - no change.
MX Linux Bullseye 2 files Recent emptied, reboot - no change.

Not effected.
Xbntu 23.04 Bookworm No recent dir.  ~/local/share/recently-used.xbel 13.2 KB
Pardus GNU/Linux 21 (yirmbir) No Recent dir.  ~/local/share/recently-used.xbel 218B (bytes)

That's the only machine currently not busy with something.

Re: [Solved] Lag opening Thunar w/ side pane set to tree.

I wasn't able to install Xebian - the installer keeps crashing when trying to install grub. I didn't bother trying to fix it (looks like the version it is looking for no longer exists).

I installed MX Linux 21.3 (based on bullseye I believe). It runs thunar 4.18.3 (current version is 4.18.6). Unfortunately I wasn't able to replicate the issue there.

Can you compare the thunar versions running in the different distros, and if possible, are you able to update the thunar version on the problemmatic distros?

4.18 and higher.

Edit:
I just installed MX in the same machine as Xebian. Yet another partition. wink

Full upgrade, reboot

View - Sidebar - Tree. No other tweaks.

Took about 10 sec to respond.

Edit:

Toggled sidebar back and forth; instant results.
Left it at shortcuts and rebooted.
Fresh boot, toggle sidebar - tree; ~10 seconds to respond.

Re: [Solved] Lag opening Thunar w/ side pane set to tree.

Are you able to run an strace on thunar and identify the cause of the delay? It would be helpful to the developer if you create a bug report.

Re: [Solved] Lag opening Thunar w/ side pane set to tree.

strace produced so much info it exceeded the scrollback buffer.

Done for now, have to get back to other projects. wink

Re: [Solved] Lag opening Thunar w/ side pane set to tree.

Appears to be hardware related, which I don't understand. Only two of my boxen are affected; the rest not.
