Hello ,
I found an old thread ( 2017 ) in connection with this topic : https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=11960
I just would like to know if there has been any improvement since then , because as one member put it :
I must admit this feature is probably the only one, that I'm really missing in XFCE at the moment.

The xfce4-docklike-plugin shows image previews of windows. The Window Buttons plugin does not, but Alt-Tab supports previews.

As I did not succeed installing this plugin starting from a tar.bz2 file I posted on a forum ( forums.debian.net ) and they gave me an address where there is a .deb package : https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/x/ … ke-plugin/ .
Now it's installed on Debian 11 and on Debian 12 : both are OK .

there still are 2 parameters that I don't understand : **docksize** and **panel indicator orientation**
1) panel indicator orientation = 1 , 2 , 3 or 4 I see no changes .
2) docksize ( I have set previewScale=0.750 )
dockSize=<int> sets the minimum width/height (depending on panel orientation) of the dock widget (unset by default)
I tried to add this parameter in the config file and set it to 1 or 20 and I didn't see anything changing . Is it because it is **unset by default** ? Changing panel orientation had no effect whatsoever on the docksize .
What am I missing here ?
ps : that plugin is exactly what I was looking for but there are some minor glitches , may be due to my inexperience ? I will see after one or two weeks of usage , or may be it's just normal behavior ? Wait and see .

I don't see any change with the dockSize setting either. Where are you seeing the "panel orientation" setting?
Have a look through the existing bug listings if you come across some glitches. They may have already been reported.

you can find "panel orientation" in the xfce4-docklike-plugin Properties window. I even have it in my config file docklike.rc ( may be because I changed it in the properties window ? ) Or did I added it myself ? I did so many things to get it to work thatt I can't remember ..pff... But as I could not know which value to give to this parameter I must have seen it somewhere .

In the screenshot from the wiki page (https://docs.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfc … ugin/start), there is no panel orientation. There is an "indicator orientation" - are you referring to that? Thats the border of the icon that is (or should be) illuminated for each item.

yes of course , indicator not panel ... it's my mistake . I checked the config file docklike.rc and I found a line with indicatorOrientation=3
ps : I think that what confused me was this : " (depending on panel orientation) " from https://docs.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfc … ugin/start .

just out of sheer curiosity : why when you launch your brand new xfce4-docklike-plugin all application icons are duplicated, with the exception of the terminal icon ? Once any one of these icons is removed everything is back to normal : one icon = one instance of any application . Fortunately they don't come back , which is great because all these useless icons take up a lot of space in the task bar .

Are you saying that the docklike plugin is creating duplicate icons? One of the features of the docklike plugin is the "pinning" of applications - they will appear in the panel even if not running. Is this what you are referring to?

That's exactly what I am saying . I found a way to get rid of the duplicated icons for every application after pinning the first one which was created . In fact when I got rid of one duplicated icon all the other duplicates disappeared . As I don't know how to make them come back I give you a link to see how it was : https://www.reddit.com/r/xfce/comments/ … _the_same/
Looking for a solution I found more people who had this issue . Is it an issue or is there a purpose to it ? .
In a short while I'll be able to post a picture of what the task bar looks like before I get rid of the duplicates .
as you can see every icon is duplicated .

I can't replicate this issue on my system. I've added and removed the plugin a number of times, pinned and un-pinned, but have never run into this issue.
Based on the deb file you installed, you appear to be running a git build from the 0.4.0 tree. 0.4.1 was released in March of this year with a number of bug fixes. Are you able to install this version to see if the issue is fixed?

I can't install the 0.4.1 version because there is an issue with the **make** command : after running **tar xvf etc...** followed by **./configure** I tried to tun **make** :
$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
As I know to make the duplicated icons disappear I'll stick with version 0.4.0 which works alright ( minor glitches as I already said ) .

once I installed all the necessary lib* and some others *dev packages I finally could install the 0.4.1 plugin but the docklike task bar does not show anywhere . I found a **docklike.desktop** file in **/usr/local/share/xfce4/panel/plugins/** , so I tried to run it with
$ sudo xdg-open /usr/local/share/xfce4/panel/plugins/docklike.desktop
but it failed and a pop up window appeared with Failed to add a plugin to the panel Failed to execute child process "dbus-launch" ( No such file or directory)
edit 1 : I opened this file and I could see that there is no command to be run . So I guess that's why it cannot be run
edit 2 : may be Type=X-XFCE-PanelPlugin can be run ? But how ?

You need to build the package by specifying the proper prefix and libexecdir parameters. On debian based systems, this would be:
./configure --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib/$(uname -m}-linux-gnu
make
sudo make install
...or if you are installing directly for the git tree:
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib/$(uname -m}-linux-gnu
make
sudo make install

I tried to specify the prefix and the libexecdir then I was asked by a " > " sign to enter something in the terminal window , as I didn't know what to enter I took another way to get the docklike task bar displayed : I made a copy of **docklike.desktop** and of **libdocklike.so** and I put these copies in the same directories as on my current laptop (with version 0.4.0 ) : it worked and now on my other debian 11 installation I have a version 0.4.1 which doesn't still shows the duplicated icons .
edit : at least in 0.4.1 one mistranslation from English to French has been corrected

Sorry, there is a typo there ( "}" instead of ")" ). Try these instead:
./configure --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib/$(uname -m)-linux-gnu
make
sudo make install
...or:
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib/$(uname -m)-linux-gnu
make
sudo make install
which doesn't still shows the duplicated icons .
Can you post back the contents of your docklike-xx.rc file (where xx is the ID of the plugin? the file should be located in ~/.config/xfce4/panel).

I first changed the names of the 2 copies I made ( see above ) and I run the new command with (xx) : now everything's fine and there are no duplicated icons . As everything went smoothly I upgraded the plugin from version 0.4.0 to version 0.4.1 on my Debian 12 installation : an obstacle course with all the missing packages that have to be found in different places . I'm glad it's all over and I can now say that the question is definitely solved . Thanks for your help .
As for the config file :
[use.r]
2 showPreviews=true
3 indicatorColor=rgb(38,162,105)
4 inactiveColor=rgb(192,28,40)
5 pinned=/usr/share/applications/firefox-esr.desktop;/usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop;/usr/share/applications/xfce4-terminal.desktop;
