Folder Icons

There's two things I'm trying to do.

First, I'd like to set the thumbnails for folders, but the only solutions I can find treat thumbnails differently, e.g. here.

The other thing is I'd like to add icons like this for Julia code and other languages not included in the icons by default. To make this work for arbitrary colors, I'd have to separately draw an icon for every color. Is there a way to automate this (just add the icon itself, rather than a separate image for each folder)?

Re: Folder Icons

Hello and welcome.

First, I'd like to set the thumbnails for folders, but the only solutions I can find treat thumbnails differently, e.g. here.

Depending on the version of Xfce, thunar, and tumbler you are running, you can create customized folder thumbnails using the instructions at that link.

The other thing is I'd like to add icons like this for Julia code and other languages not included in the icons by default. To make this work for arbitrary colors, I'd have to separately draw an icon for every color. Is there a way to automate this (just add the icon itself, rather than a separate image for each folder)?

The simplest way is to follow the instructions from above and create custom folder thumbnails as you require. The special folder icons currently used are limited to those provided by the xdg-user-dirs spec.
