Where are stored the setting configuration files?

Hi there,

I have installed the new version of Linux Mint 21.1 and in the same time I have in one partition Mint 19.3.
I would like to use the same configuration of Tricia 19.3 on Mint 21.1 and I appreciate to know which file I can copy: are these file stored in /etc/xfce4 or /etc/xdg ?

Thanks

Re: Where are stored the setting configuration files?

Greetings!

In my experience "upgrading" Linux Mint (18 > 19; 19 > 20; 20 > 21, 21.0 > etc), any "upgrades" to Xfce's configuration USUALLY work out ok ("Mintupgrade" works like a charm). Alas, copying on old configuration onto a brand-new configuration is -- at best -- problematic. Btw: the OPERATIVE system's configuration can be found (on Mint systems) in ~/.config/xfce4/*

Fortunately there is a way to (partially) solve your problem. In Mint 19 (xfce v4.12/4.14), xfce introduced (afaicr) a utility called "xfce4-Panel-Profiles" that can take a user-named snapshot of your operative configuration, save it to a file, and than you can use that file to restore onto another installation (Panel > Panel Preferences > Backup and Restore). Ime, about 80-90% of stuff carries over ok. The remainder, alas, does not solve launcher inconsistencies, theme problems, missing icons, user-installed software configs, ~/.local overrides and such.

Morefover, on Mint 19 Xfce jumped from 4.12/4.14, then to 4.16, and now with Mint 21.2 to 4.18, so there's no sure way for you to jump from your Mint 19.3 configuration to Mint 21.1 ... Here's what I do: I am keeping a change-log of all the changes I make on a particular system, then re-apply (based on that log, incl. mini-scripts) any necessary changes to the NEW system. Usually that takes 1-2 hours max, compared to many hours of trouble shooting and tracking down any missing/nonfunctioning items.

Cheers, m4a

Re: Where are stored the setting configuration files?

Well, thanks a lot for your information.
Sorry, I don't find the utility "xfce4-Panel-Profiles" but I have seen it is called "xfpanel-switch" that I have to install. It is not installed by default.
Anyway Thanks and I'll see what happen.

Have a nice mid-august (ferragosto in Italy)

Re: Where are stored the setting configuration files?

You are welcome --- and have a nice mid-August yourself, too!

"xfpanel-switch", if I can remember, was an early version of the xfce4-panel-profiles add-on. You are correct, neither versions were installed on Mint by default. However, it is now integrated into Xfce4 (no extra install is needed such as "xfce4-goodies") and should be run, imho, anytime a configuration change is made ...

Cheers, m4a
