hi,
I have installed the latest Xubuntu 23.10 on my computer.
I have been trying to copy backed up game folders, music and documents from an external WD Elements 2 Tb hdd back onto my system.
My system freezes though when copying files/folders either straight away or a after a little time when using Thunar.
[In Thunar I have tried changing - transfer files in parallel to 'always'.]
As my system keeps freezing when trying to copy files, I am having to hard reboot.
Ive not experienced this issue when copying files from internal ntfs drives, or eternal ssds formatted as ext4.
Any ideas how id go about fixing this issue? (ive checked external hdd file system and its fine)
many thanks, darsk
[edit]
Even when I'm copying files with Thunar from internal hard drives, I may not be getting system freezing.
There are crash reports in my Journalctl at the time such as this;

Greetings!
Fwif, here's a clue to your problem...

Ime, NTFS implementation under linux has -- at best -- been so-so. The foregoing trace message would indicate that the ntfs-driver is updating the volume with ntfs' "last accessed" meta data, and gets overloaded. Often, file-i/o errors cause the kernel to freeze. Perhaps you can try to mount your external ntfs-formatted drive as `read-only`? That prevents the ntfs-driver from updating the file's inode (aka resource-fork). Here's a good write-up @ https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-li … -on-linux/
Cheers, m4a

I appreciate the reply mint4all
That log was for one of my internal drives, the kernel wasn't happy!
Thunar will just hang my system if I try to copy any data from an external drive.
Makes sense what you wrote, will definitely try this on my external drive.
Thank you for the link you kindly added
thanks, darsk

This is likely a hardware/usb issue. USB transfers also have much more overhead than other protocols.
