I'm running Fedora 35 on a new laptop and xscreensaver never activates. I've got it set to blank after 20 minutes, cycle after 10 and never lock but no matter how long I wait, it never activates. And, if I try to test it, it often ends the test within a minute even if I don't touch any keys. Any ideas?

Do you have presentation mode enabled?
xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p /xfce4-power-manager/presentation-mode
Is the xscreensaver daemon running?
ps -ef | grep xscreensaver

The response to the first is true, and both xscreensaver and xscreensaver-systemd are running. I'm not a beginner, and checked both of those obvious things myself. And, when I got up this morning, the screensaver was running but didn't pick up again when I was away for over 40 minutes. Not only that, I have the screenlock OFF but it locked anyway. I think that's in power management, but I'm not sure as it's not come up before on this laptop.

The first command should return false. Left-click the battery icon in the panel and uncheck "Presentation Mode", or run the following command:
xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p /xfce4-power-manager/presentation-mode -s false
Presentation Mode prevents the computer from going to sleep, dimming screening and inhibts the screensaver.

I just got home from a convention, and are replying from my desktop, not the laptop. Will deal with this next time I'm using it.
Now, there's a question needing to be asked: why is Presentation Mode the default?

It shouldn't be ("FALSE" is the default value).
Which distro are you using again? Maybe they set it as default to true?

Fedora 35; as soon as my TUIT is round, I'll upgrade to 37, and later 39. (Skipping more than one version isn't recommended.)

I don't have access to a fedora system right now. Can you look into /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/ and see if there is an xfce4-power-manager.xml file there? If so, can you post back its contents?

I've just turned Presentation Mode off; now to see if it works.

Hi,
I installed the distro Siduction on a Lenovo ThinkBook and had/have the same problem. After I disabled the presentation mode some settings of the Xfce4-power-manager work. The screen get black after the setting time and also the brightness reduction works correctly but the screen-saver does not work. On my system is the Xfce4-screensaver installed, not the xscreensaver.
What is the sense of the screensaver if I have enabled the power-manager? Or what has priority, the screensaver oder the power-managerf?
