How to change the current tab title from the command line?

There are times when I would like to change the title of the current tab when I change the contents of the tab. For instance, when I invoke a command like less I would like to change the tab title to the file name. I have not discovered a CLI command to change the current tab title. I feel that it must be possible and that I am missing something.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

If you are referring to xfce4-terminal, have a read through this thread to see if the information there is helpful.
