Keychron V5 Max New Keyboard Backlighting Issues

thank you for any/all CORRECT info/help...

lenovo t-440 thinkpad
brand new keyboard
connecting via usb
ac power

backlighting at times won't even come on [function] [tab] depressed.
fn + w and fn + s don't adjust brightness either.

[function] [q]  depressed at times only changes to two different 'color schemes'.

documentation from keychron states those ^^^ keystrokes should perform the backlight on/off [function] [tab] and all color changes [function] [q]...
youtube vids i watched say and show the same.

referred to VIA software to 'flash the firmware' but keychron says DON'T it could make the keyboard unusable.
and current compatibility check on their site has no listing for my specific keyboard but does have some other V's.

i did a factory reset and confirmed toggle on back is on windows not mac [only choices].
using ac power no bluetooth and want to at least get this [SOLVED] before any bluetooth use and ac will be primary use.

i want to use solid backlighting [white] but of course want ALL options working...

anyone able to help?...
