Hi. If this error is restricted to MX Linux (ToZ?) then the report belongs on the MX Forum where the Devs can see it. Be sure to add the output of Quick System Info to your post--thanks.
FWIW, we just today released MX-23.3.

nobody knows what the problem is,
which only exists on Xfce,
it works on KDE

I was able to install and run argostranslate on Arch Linux with Xfce without any problem using pipx. I don't think this is a desktop environment issue.
@McGriffin, based on the post that linked to in your initial thread regarding to existing files error, it looks like you might have conflicting installs of the package. Which instructions did you use? What commands did you run?

Thanks for looking, ToZ. I cross-posted your response on our Forum where OP had started a thread.

obviously you didn't even look at the posting properly...
pip didn't work, so pipx, like you did
have a look at the screens.
[Edit]
pipx install argostranslate
&
pipx install argostranslategui
calling argos-translate-gui remains with “Invalid machine command”
...
today
pipx install argostranslate
calling argos-translate ... remains with “Invalid machine command”
argospm install translate-en_de
argospm install translate-de_en
to download
...
.local/share/argos-translate/packages/ <- here they are present

Yes, I used "pipx install argostranslate".
$ pipx install argostranslate
$ argospm update
$ argospm install translate-en_de
$ argos-translate --from en --to de "Hello, how are you?"
Hallo, wie geht's?
$ pipx install argostranslategui"
$ argos-translate-gui
I think its an issue with your install and it has nothing to do with Xfce.
Edit: Just downloaded and installed MX-Linux 23.3 in a vm - the following instructions worked:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install pipxmkdir $HOME/tmp
TMPDIR=$HOME/tmp
pipx install argostranslatePATH=$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH
argospm update
argospm install translate-en_de
argos-translate --from en --to de "Hello, how are you?"pipx install argostranslategui
argos-translate-gui
Instructions were from the main argostranslate github page with some apt-specific commands and the setup and use of TMPDIR to ensure enough space for the build,

exactly the same way ...
I'm not an idiot
It's exactly the same thing I did, this on two computers and it works with the KDE interface and not with Xfce
I have more or less the same software installed on both machines, nothing out of the ordinary, just less on the Dell
and I am not starting all over again now
then I will do without this translator
... has already cost me far too much time anyway,
which I don't actually have
Thank you for the time you have spent
and as I said, it can be a lot of things
whether it is now Xfce with the connection to the MX iso, nobody can answer properly, it just catches your eye

Our main packager Stevo just posted this:
Debian now disables pipx installs because it's a security risk. Nothing to do with XFCE.
This has been known since Debian 12 was being developed.
I guess our KDE with its default "ahs" (advanced hardware something) package has a workaround.
