Ctrl+Shift+U doesn't quite work correctly

In xubuntu 22.04.4 LTS, when I use Ctrl+Shift+U to input Unicode codepoints/characters, it *technically* works but the "underlined u" and subsequent typed alphanumeric characters for the codepoint do not display at all before pressing the Enter key. The input method does technically work, but this is not how it is supposed to function. I looked for settings to change (IBus, XIM, etc.) but nothing worked. Any ideas?
