Try something like this in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css:

#systray-6>box {margin: -10px}

...the number "6" might be different for your system. The following command will get that for you:

xfconf-query -c xfce4-panel -lv | grep systray

Also adjust the "10px" value to suit.
