very top row buttons (wide rectangular box) for app drop down is gone

very top row of buttons (wide rectangular boxes) for each running app drop down (that has "Minimize" through "Close" in the drop down) is gone for just ONE user.  being that it is just ONE user makes me believe that it is a setting somewhere that i must unintentionally changed for that user.  it probably got changed weeks ago and i cannot remember what i did back then.  any idea what setting i could have changed that would make it so those buttons would disappear?

if they had disappeared for ALL users the i would believe it could have been a faulty upgrade somewhere.  but it only affects ONE user.

Xubuntu 20.04.6 LTS last upgraded earlier this evening and rebooted after the upgrade.

Try right clicking on the Panel, mouse over Panel then click Add new items.
Or go Menu > Settings > Panel then click the Items tab then click Add.
Look or search for the Window Buttons entry, highlight it, click Add.

No probs.
Separators can be used to change the location of where various Panel items sit if required.
They can be expanded or not, made transparent etc. etc., add them the same way as the Window Buttons.
