[SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

Hi guys,

I have been having this issue for a while, I'd like to ask assistance to catch out which is the issue so I can report upstream to the FreeBSD maintainers...

Basically after the login (lightdm) or starting from the console the session fails, I get a partial desktop: sometimes incomplete panels and background; and sometimes only the background both without mouse. It is only after restarting several times lightdm (sometimes more than 10 times) that eventually the DE is properly loaded.

I don't believe it is something related with the Nvidia Driver or X11, since I don't have any suspicious hint in to X.org log.

As a matter of fact I do believe this is the cause:

(xfsettingsd:89607): xfconf-WARNING **: 23:54:07.704: Failed to set property "displays::/ActiveProfile": Operation was cancelled

Is this a know problem? It is something that is caused by another problem?

Some specs:

FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE amd64
Xfce version: 4.18
GTK version: 3.24.42
CPU: Intel i7-6700

Thanks...

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

What does the following return:

xfconf-query -c displays -lv

Is the xfconfd process running when you have these issues?

When starting from the console, try using a command like:

exec xfce4-session > ~/.xsession-errors 2>&1

...this will create an ~/.xsession-errors file. Review that file for any potential Xfce errors.

One off-the-cuff thing you might want to try is to clear the contents of the ~/.cache/sessions directory before logging in (note: this will delete all of your saved sessions, if you are using that functionality).

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

Hi made some tests but I didn't get any substantial hint...

This command:

xfconf-query -c displays -lv

Doesn't work from the TTY console, and I simply get:

Failed to init libxconf: Cannot autolaunch D-Bus without X11 $DISPLAY.

But when it doesn't start I can't do nothing and I am forced to enter into a TTY to operate the OS.

Cleaning the cache did not have any effect, while this is the xfce4 log:

/usr/local/bin/iceauth: creating new authority file /var/run/user/1001/ICEauthority

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

You have to to run the xfconf-query command from within Xfce. So try to log in and get your corrupted desktop then run:

xfconf-query -c displays -lv

...and:

ps -ax | grep xfconfd

When the display is not loaded properly nothing is working, I can't do anything, I can only operate through TTY...

I made a diff to understand what "xf" module are loaded when the session is "broken" (left) and when is working (right):

But they looks identically... I spotted a parallel issue, that happens when the XFCE isn't loaded, I am going to check on the FreeBSD forum... And I'll report back, thanks.

EDIT:

I thought there could be a correlation with Pulseaudio, but uninstalling it didn't solve this issue...

In your initial post, you mentioned that you got to a partial desktop.

If Xfce isn't loading at all, is the .xsession-errors you listed below all that you get?

Maybe its a video driver issue then? But you state that there is nothing suspicious in your xorg log file.

If you create a secondary temporary user, is that user able to login consistently?

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

Hi thanks for helping me out, it is very appreciated!

In your initial post, you mentioned that you got to a partial desktop.

Yes I got a partial desktop but it is insensitive to mouse and keyboard input.

If Xfce isn't loading at all, is the .xsession-errors you listed below all that you get?

Correct, the only hints I get is: (xfsettingsd:89607): xfconf-WARNING **: 23:54:07.704: Failed to set property "displays::/ActiveProfile": Operation was cancelled

Maybe its a video driver issue then? But you state that there is nothing suspicious in your xorg log file.

I exclude it because lightdm won't work either, do not have log errors, startx runs a generic X11 session (perhaps xfwm) without issues.

If you create a secondary temporary user, is that user able to login consistently?

I'll try this one too and report back! ?

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

I created a fresh new account but I continue to have the same issue...

cat .xsession-errors
/usr/local/bin/iceauth: creating new authority file /var/run/user/1002/ICEauthority

** (xfce4-power-manager:20807): WARNING **: 00:54:36.182: could not get output property

** (wrapper-2.0:21812): WARNING **: 00:54:36.376: could not get output property

I asked on the FreeBSD forum and this is happening only to me...

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

Unfortunately there isn't anything in that log file that identifies a reason. Can you post back your full Xorg.log file from a failed attempt plus any relevant messages from /var/log/messages?

Reading the Handbook I found a way to display some information from the .core file:

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

You will need a package with debug symbols - I'm not sure how that is done on FreeBSD.

Looking at your post over at the freebsd forums, you have some more relevant messages listed - specifically:

libxfce4ui-WARNING **: 12:07:01.940: ICE I/O Error

There is a closed bug report on this related to to issues with screen resolution (and potentially video driver). This really looks like a video driver issue to me. It looks to me from your xorg log file that you have multiple monitors connected. Since it appears that this is a laptop, can you try booting and logging in without any external displays connected?

Is this one of those dual video card (intel/nvidia) laptops?

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

Hi Toz, thank you very much!

The fact that a closed bug ended up into a package it is something that FreeBSD maintainers can look into.

Actually I have a second monitor connected to my laptop that I use as main display, but my laptop doesn't have an integrated Intel GPU only a mobile discrete Nvidia GPU.

Later at home I will check what happen without the second monitor connected. I would point out that I have been using FreeBSD since release 13 and everything has worked fine until 14.1, which raised up this annoying issue.

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

Did the test without the second monitor connected but I had the same issue... Actually the .xsession-errors.log doesn't show that problem with libxfce4ui anymore:

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

With this test, did you get a desktop (or partial desktop)? If so, does "ps -ax" show any running Xfce processes?

If there are running Xfce processes but not a complete desktop, can you try with composting disabled?

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 - p /general/use_composting -s false

...or uncheck the checkbox in Settings Manager > Window Manager Tweaks > Compositing if you can get to it. After doing so, you may need to log out and in again if the effect isn't immediate.

Re: [SOLVED] [FreeBSD] Session often doesn't start properly

The situation is always the same only the background perhaps inherited from LightDM or background and panels without icons with keyboard and mouse insensitive.

For the next tests besides doing what you suggested, is there any knob to change for increasing the verbosity of the errors?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with FreeBSD and whether it has some method. Some of the Xfce components, however, are able to generate more verbose output.

  • xfsettingsd:

    XFSETTINGSD_DEBUG=1 xfsettingsd --replace --no-daemon
  • xfwm4
You can restart on a terminal to see if it generates output and also specify different compositing vblank modes. See:

    xfwm4 --help

    ...so for example:

    xfwm4 -c on -b off -r

...will restart the window manager with compositing enabled and vblank off.

  • xfdesktop:

    xfdesktop -Q; sleep 1; xfdesktop -e
  • xfce4-panel:

    xfce4-panel -q; sleep 1; PANEL_DEBUG=1 xfce4-panel
  • xfce4-session:
Create and export a system-wide variable and re-login to Xfce:

    export XFSM_VERBOSE=true

...and then you will get an ~/.xfce4-session.verbose.log file with verbose output.

Definitely the compositor when I disabled it I made twenty successful login in a row... When I reactivated it, the second login failed although XFCE was running:
