Their is something very buggy with the processing of headings by the code coloring system used by Mousepad. It will completely balk, hang for a moment and then fail, while changing a heading from say an <h1> to an <h2>. In that interim moment when the two opening and closing tags don't match, that is when the coloring dies. The text is treated as plain text, to restore code coloring you need to close the tab with the broken document, and reopen the file.
There is another time when the coloring dies... inside the heading element try making a line of whitespace like so:
<h1>This is
a
heading!
</h1>
This has been an issue for a number of years. I just didn't say anything it back then. (I can't use gitlab, javascript, so thanks for understanding)
Thanks for reading, dear great defenders of freedom computing.

This is entirely managed by GtkSourceView, what is your version of this library?

Hi Tamaranch,
Thanks, I'm on whatever version Manjaro were giving out recently but it looks like they have an even more recent update since so I'll do the update and report back after. If anyone has the latest version already and wants to report the state of this bug, that would be most excellent.
**...still recovering from the last update tbh **

I can actually reproduce the problem with gtksourceview-4 but not with git master, see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtksourc … te_2207802

Most excellent! If only I waited a bit longer
