I see that Wayland support is being worked on for Xfce. I read that Wayland does not natively support server-side decorations and support for this was added via the currently unstable "XDG decoration" protocol. My question is, is Xfce relying on this protocol to bring xfwm4 over to the Wayland port of Xfce? I love having a window manager that lets me pick my own style and control behaviors of title bars, it'd be a major loss and setback for Xfce if this was lost in the Wayland port.

Porting xfwm4 to Wayland is a big job that's still in its infancy, but it's sure to support server-side decorations when it's done.

I wasn't able to find any information on this on the roadmap. Just wondering what technical approach they're taking to this since it's not a native part of Wayland, and if we'll lose any of the features / theming we've come to expect from a window manager.

xfwm4 will be a wlroots compositor (in addition to the X11 window manager that will stay as is both for X11 and Xwayland), and yes it will implement the XDG decoration protocol for SSD, all wlr-* protocols, and some private protocols for our needs.

I really appreciate the flexibility that Xfce offers in terms of window management and theming. I hope the team can integrate the XDG decoration protocol effectively to maintain the user experience.
