Mouse cursor disappears & keyboard input fails after starting session

I have a VirtualBox VM running xubuntu. Recently, shortly after I start it up, the mouse cursor disappears and it stops responding to keyboard input. It's getting through my .xsession OK, so I'm not sure where the failure is. I can ssh into the VM without problems, but cannot start X applications that way.

I would welcome any suggestions about how to diagnose and/or fix this.

The problems began after I changed the number of displays attached to the VM from 4 to 1, and played around with arandr a bit. I don't know whether that's related.

I would look at the host system and the log files there first. You could also create another xubuntu VM to see if you can replicate the issue.
