Windows 10Firefox 130.0

Hello from the Netherlands!

Hi all, my name's Roger, and since switching from Windows 10 to Arch Linux (btw) on my laptop, I've been trying out desktop environments like KDE Plasma and GNOME, but I settled on XFCE because of how lightweight and pleasant it is, especially after applying a theme and icon pack I like, along with using the picom compositor for transparent blurred window borders.

Question for all because why not: what made you choose XFCE, and what do you like/dislike about it? I like XFCE because it's light on system resources, looks great (with some themes and icons), and has just the right amount of customizability for me. One thing that's lacking, however, is Wayland support, but I know it's being worked on and that's a great thing. (And yes, I know I won't be able to use picom on Wayland, but once Wayland is supported, it's better to use it over X11 anyways.)

Hopefully I'll have a great time on here reading posts once in a while and asking questions and stuff, and I hope you guys have a great time on here too. smile

Hi all, my name's Roger,

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Question for all because why not: what made you choose XFCE,

When I first got into computer programming in the mid-90s, I learned unix and c programming on sparcstation running CDE. So when I started looking at linux in the late 90s (Slackware/Redhat), Xfce was the natural/comfortable DE for me.

and what do you like/dislike about it?

Ease of use, consistency over the years, minimal bugs, and useability. In addition, I'm the kind of person that likes to roll up my sleeves up and get into the guts of a system to tweak/tune/configure it - and Xfce offers the best kind of flexibility for me. Access to an infinite number of customizations without a "cockpit panel" to cause confusion - or a forced design mode.

One thing that's lacking, however, is Wayland support, but I know it's being worked on and that's a great thing.

In fact, it will run on wayland if you use git master - I'm running it using the wayfire compositor and its slowly getting there. Not sure if wayland will bring any tangible benefits for me, but its good to see Xfce moving to support the supposed new standard.

Hopefully I'll have a great time on here reading posts once in a while and asking questions and stuff, and I hope you guys have a great time on here too. smile

Enjoy your stay.
