There is a bug currently where onboard crashes when you mouse over it.
I managed to get it working in my user session by running...
gsettings set org.onboard.keyboard input-event-source 'GTK'
Is it possible to apply this onboard setting to the lightdm login screen?

Have you tried setting "input-event-source=GTK" in /etc/onboard-defaults.conf?

Thanks for the reply.
Tried a few locations for onboard-defaults.conf, stated in /usr/share/doc/onboard/ but no luck or the fix doesn't work in lightdm.
I don't need onboard for login....I just find it handy occasionally.
I'll wait for a fix.

Does it crash immediately when you hover over it? Or can you get to its settings dialog? There you can also set the input event source.

No, it's visible for a few seconds but doesn't appear to receive mouse clicks.
This is a new install of Xubuntu 24.04 but looking at my old 22.04 install on another partition, the onboard preferences menu is not accessible
at the login screen keyboard.

You might want to try using a different display manager or check if there’s an update for onboard that addresses this. Sometimes, switching display managers can improve compatibility with certain applications.

Found a solution.
sudo -u lightdm dbus-launch gsettings set org.onboard.keyboard input-event-source 'GTK'
Shows a message about Authorization but seems to work anyway.
glen@Xubu24minimal:~$ sudo -u lightdm dbus-launch gsettings set org.onboard.keyboard input-event-source 'GTK'
[sudo] password for glen:
Authorization required, but no authorization protocol specified
