duplicated mouse cursor on top of all windows

Since a few days I have a mouse cursor  (not moving) that is shown above all windows and the moving mouse cursor.
A screenshot does not catch it. (When I make a screenshot that captures the mouse cursor it is only the proper one, the moving one.)

I've read in old forum posts that this has happened before but no solution.

Any idea how to get rid of it or even start looking where this is coming from?

After a reboot the mouse cursor is on the exact same spot every time.

It is on the external display by the way. Laptop: 3840x2160 scale 0,5x0,5; external 2560x1440.

Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, XFCE v 4.18, GTK 3.24.1, kernel 6.8.0-48-generic.

Oh! When I turned off the scaling of the main laptop window (set to a lower resolution instead) the extra mouse cursor disappeared!

So problem solved for me, but maybe someone might want to look into this what is causing it?
