Here is new Thunar problem I have recent encountered. I wish I could post an image to this message, but I don't know how.
Description:
I open Thunar and navigate to "Browse Network" folder.
In the Thunar address bar I enter (type in) the smb address to share: smb://<hostname>.local/<share>/
Instead of the share opening up in the window, I receive an "Open with" pop-up window asking me to select an application from a list.
In the pop-up windows a message is displayed: "Open File System (/) and other files of type "Unknown" with:
If I double-click on the <hostname> folder in Browse Network, it open as it should and in the address bar I see "smb://<hostname>.local/". I then can navigate into the share.
What is going on with this app?
Thunar 4.19.3
Xfce 4.18
Xubuntu 24.10

Funny that PCManFM doesn't behave like what I described to the OP. With PCManFM each scenario will open to display the share and or open the share in the file manager.
Typing in the location (address) bar
- smb://laptop1
- smb://laptop1/share
- smb://laptop1.local
- smb://laptop1.local/share
- smb://<ip address>
- smb://<ip address>/share
But with Thunar, an "Open with" pop-up window is displayed asking for a selection of an application. What changed or why the change in the behavior?

Weird, when things are bad and a user down grades to a earlier version of a tool or application. Everything seems to work again. So that's what I did. I installed the VBox to my Windows 10 Home laptop, installed the guest Xubuntu 22.04.5 VM which is running Xfce 4.16 and Thunar 4.16.10. None of the symptoms described in the OP are seen.

Do you have the the gvfs backends or gvfs smb packages installed? I'm not sure what they're called on ubuntu.

Yes, all the required components are installed.

That is most likely a bug in version 4.19.3 (a dev release). Please check if the problem still occurs with Thunar 4.20 which can be installed by adding this PPA:
