xfdesktop 4.20 defining a different default wallpaper

in previous versions of Xfce it was possible to define a default background other than the Xfce default by using a generic xfce4-desktop.xml file with a "monitor0" designation.   These do not work anymore, at least with the current format I was using.

Is it possible to designate a different initial wallpaper for new users via a default xfce4-desktop.xml file, without having to recompile xfdesktop?

If you are building xfdesktop from source, you can use the "--with-default-backdrop-filename=/path/to/file" parameter to specify one.

Re: xfdesktop 4.20 defining a different default wallpaper

yeah, we maintain our own package for now that defines our own default background via the build switch already.  but Xfce has been a classic target for respinners for about a million years and the inability to set a new custom background is a big thing or those that don't actually maintain any packages.

I plan to jump through a lot of hoops on MX to make it possible for respinners to set a custom background.    Its good to know that setting via the xml files is no longer possible, so I don't waste any more effort there.

thanks!

You can try posting to that thread to see if you can convince the developer to add the ability back in - you're comment about re-spinners is valid. Not everyone has the ability or desire to build from source. A run-time option would be nice.
