[Solved] How to make Clock span 3 columns in Deskbar panel?

Hi there,

I'm running into an issue on the following version:

This is xfdesktop version 4.20.0, running on Xfce 4.20.
Built with GTK+ 3.24.43, linked with GTK+ 3.24.43.

Since a recent update, the Clock item on my Deskbar spanning 3 48px rows, which used to neatly house my large digital Clock item, shrunk to a seemingly almost single column (it's kinda a little more, but still quite small - it seems to scale down if I move it to a single row, but no noticeable difference in size between 2 and 3).
I'd like it to revert to the earlier behavior, where the Clock would scale to the full width of the Deskbar.

I've only just figured out where to put a CSS file (~/.config/gtk3/gtk.css), and I'm not sure about which identifiers to use.

Thanks!

Is there also a way to scale that specific item?
E: found it! Hovering over the item in the list of items will pop up the name to be used in the CSS, in my case clock-28 👍

Update: found this link, which helped a tremendous amount in understanding the CSS behind XFCE, but I still can't seem to find where to set the width of the widget on the Deskbar.

Some discussion about the LCD clock size issue here. I don't think css can fix this because the segments are hand drawn.

As an alternative/workaround, add the genmon plugin to the panel with the following properties:

  • Command = sh -c "echo $(date +%l:%M)"

  • Label = unchecked

  • Period = 1.00

  • Use a single row = checked

  • Font = select an LCD font and larger font size to get it to fit.

Top one is clock, bottom one is genmon plugin.

A bit finnicky, and I didn't really find the exact same font... but it'll do.

Thanks a bunch for the assistance!
Marked the thread as Solved, as your signature mentions 🙂

[E] Update: the font in the screenshot is called "Alarm Clock", but I've moved to yet another font which is quite a bit closer to the original Clock font, called Technology. My only gripe with that is that it isn't Monotype, meaning 11:11 looks very tiny. Oh well!🤷
