focus follows mouse: fails to set focus after drag and drop

First, no problem if I use Thunar. But if using pcmanfm (my preference), pcmanfm-qt, or dolphin, and I drag a file from the file-manager to an other window.  I've tested with both Geany and Firefox-ESR as the target. The dragged file opens in the target window, but focus remains with the file-manager.
This only became annoying today because I was cleaning/reorganizing a bunch of old files: so I'd drag a file onto Geany to look, then CTRL+w ... but instead of Geany closing the file, my file-manager closed, and I'd have to re-open and navigate back to where I was working... at least a dozen times.
Anything I can do to fix this? Thanks
