Couple of updates.
Be careful of the application LightDM GTK Greetings setter.   There are files in /etc/lightdm that contain base release data.  If you save a change to say the Background, the app will remove all the base data and just leave your changes.
Once I restored these file to the base release then the problems I was trying to fix went away.
