I was wondering what kind of conversations have already happened about updating the forum software. Presumably people must ask because it to move it to a discord or something once in a while.
I am not speaking in favor of such a move, I think there would be a lot of risk involved. And in many ways the forum matches the xfce4 vibe. I have certainly benefited from the easily-searchable structure. So much has already been answered *if* you can manage to find the right post. But it's more straightforward to search than any of the socials, due to the the more static nature of the content. I don't talk too much here but I can't tell you all the hours I spent reading.
The Fluxbb repo looks like there was a release 10 years ago but a few PRs here and there. Their own forum/website are defunct. Is PHP/MySQL good for long term stability? I have the vague idea with some languages, it's been an issue, like with Python 2->3 there was some chaos. But others are more stable over time. COBOL and Fortran famously at the opposite pole. I this forum chugging along on a "it's not broke, don't fix it" strategy? I assume My SQL has good long term viability because it's used in business.
I hope one of the coding wizards has a good backup strategy for the database and backend. It would be devastating if all this knowledge was lost, or could only be accessed via clunky Web Archive.
Overall I enjoy the forum's form and its many contributors. Thanks to everyone. Here's some thing I like
- I even like the really whiny posts where people are being unreasonably demanding about he world being exactly suited to them.
- The regular contributor super stars who patiently help with questions form simple to esoteric for the last *x* years
- I appreciate that first answer to every question isn't slapping on the knuckle for not having found and read the appropriate man pages or product documentation. The regulars must be doing their meditating or something to keep calm. It is exemplary.

We're using a fork of FluxBB that has had more recent activity. There have been requests to use some other forum software but nothing serious - we'll probably be staying here for now.
Mark solved threads as [SOLVED] to make it easier for others to find solutions.
