On Debian 12 (Bookworm), Thunar will display icons for the chosen theme, except in the case of special directory icons in the home directory when the Tango theme is chosen. It displays icons from the Gnome theme. This seems to be because Tango lacks those icons. I had this problem years ago in Debian 10 (Buster) and solved it by placing symlinks to folder.png in usr/share/icons/Tango/*/places with names for the missing icons, e.g. folder-documents.png. That isn't working this time.

I tried renaming /usr/share/icons/gnome so Thunar couldn't find them, but then it displayed the Adwaita icons instead of the Tango.

Solved it. Finding https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=11860, I discovered I needed to run
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Tango
Now the new icon links are read.
