Fonts and applications

Hello,

I've installed XFCE on a basic Raspberry Pi Lite OS.  It works fine and the fonts are alright, they look full, bodied so to speak.  I use the terminal quite a lot and it's not straining on the eyes at all.  I like the Deja Vu set of fonts.  However applications such as firefox and emacs, despite specifying the same font, are displaying thin, fragile fonts which are not easy on the eyes.  I do not know where to look for a solution.  Is XFCE involved ?  Is it the OS ?  Is it up to the applications themselves (although not likely since the same font set was specified in the case of firefox) ?

Any pointers would be appreciated, cheers.
