Its been a l-o-n-g time since I was here . . . The FF icon has disappeared from the panel after the 128.9.0esr update! It has been replaced with a default blue and white folder which is a bit hard to see. This is on Devuan Chimaera (Debian Bullseye) that has been working flawlessly until the latest upgrade. Any clues how to get the foxy icon back?

Right click on the icon and select properties. You should be able to change the icon there, however, I'm not sure why the default FF icon would not be used.

Thanks for the suggestion but . . .
Right clicking the icon of an open window on the task bar only brings up location options - I have 7 desktops running - and window config options.
Right clicking the icon in the top bar does nothing but a left click brings up window state and locations options.
Accessing from the "Internet" option of the main menu, the Firefox ESR icon is a black foxie open ring. Have no idea where THAT came from. Right clicking anywhere on that line opens a new FF window.
No "icon" option anywhere. What am I missing? Maybe an about:config option or even in the main menu, though I haven't been able to find it . . .

I though you were talking about a launcher in the panel, not the open application icon. Still, this icon should be pulled from the app. You could look at the .desktop file and see what icon it specifies. It may also be theme related. If the .desktop file says org.something.something then it's likely a theme issue. If no icon is provided then a stock icon will be used. You could edit the .desktop file to specify an icon you prefer.

I am old and these days mostly point and click and long for analog. Please remind me of the complete path to where .desktop resides. FWiW . . . the proper icon does appear on the title-bar of a new tab. Thanks

Path to .desktop files is /usr/share/applications.
For icons /usr/share/icons

Thanks for trying, eriefisher, but no joy here and confirmed by a friend.
Computers were great fun for a while but alas . . . it seems that the freedom to 'have it your way' now has one foot in the grave and the walls are closing in. We are being forced to submit and obey. I feel a bit like Lea in Star Wars in that famous scene. (Please note that I never saw a Star Wars movie - not masochistic - but have seen that clip.) Sadly, I don't see a happy ending to this journey for many users. We will all eventually be forced to submit to Gnome and GTK etc. madness. It has been a great ride but the current state of all this is quite depressing. In the meantime, I will do the best I can on the trailing edge to avoid all the SNS coming down the tubes. It is a good time to be old . . .
Thanks for all the fish . . . it was a great ride while it lasted . . .
