xfce 4.18 on
Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)
webcam: iSlim 2020AAF Mono (as reported by pavucontrol)
Using cheese.
The video appears OK but there is no sound.
using pavucontrol /input devices, the iSlim device (Port microphone) shows activity whch responds sensibly when I make noise near it.
But the "Output Devices" tab shows no activity.
VLC works correctly.
I'd very much like some help.

This is not a topic for Xfce, but more about PulseAudio if you really use PulseAudio, or Pipewire.
You mean you can't here the microphone from the output devices? That is normal, it would lead to a bad feedback loop. You can do that when using a headphone, for instance using EasyEffects and then monitoring the input effects...
Just try to use your microphone with a recording application or a conference call via your webbrowser. You need to make the camera microphone being the default input device, not muted and normal volume level. If you see the meters moving, the microphone is already working.
But again, this is offtopic here.
