@wanderer
I was able to change the resolution following your advice from thread:
https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=79980#p79980
Do you know how to change color of the login window? The default is a bright white and I would like to change it something dark (less harsh on the eyes).

That would depend on which greeter you use. For lightdm-gtk-greeter you can open the setting dialog and select themes etc.
lightdm-gtk-greeter-settingsBut it's all right, when you're all in pain and you feel the rain come down
It's alright, when you find your way, then you see it disappear
It's alright....

Oops should have been @eeriefisher not @wanderer. Anyway thanks again. I was able to solve it by doing the following:
1. sudo apt-get install lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings
2. sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
In the section:
[Seat:*]Uncomment line starting with:
greeter-sessionChange it to:
greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter3. Run command in terminal:
lightdm-gtk-greeter-settingsA GUI pops up that allowed me to change to a dark theme Adwaita dark.
4. Hit the "Reload" button on the GUI box and my login screen was updated to the new setting.
Thanks again.
