I just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 24.04, which comes with Thunar 4.18.8. However, I'd like to use one of the newer versions, since they come with some features and bug fixes that I want. This leads me to two questions:
1. Is there a relatively straightforward way of upgrading Thunar to the latest version that doesn't involve complicated steps like compiling from source or backports? For instance, is there a PPA somewhere I could add?
2. Is it safe to do so? I've seen some claims that running a version of a file explorer that's newer than the one that comes pre-installed is a bad idea, but I can't imagine running Thunar 4.21.0 instead of 4.18.8 would make that much of a difference.
Note that I try to stay on the LTEs, so I'm trying to avoid an upgrade to Xubuntu 24.10 or 25.04, but I also don't want to wait until 26.04 drops next year.
Thanks in advance to the community for their help!

Aside from compiling and dependency hell and building everything you need you could add the newer repo install what's desired and required then disable the repo. This will likely upgrade several other packages as well. Maybe more than you want.

When you say "add the newer repo", what repo are you referring to? Is there an official distribution repo or PPA, i.e. something with precompiled binaries I can install?

I'm referring to the newer ubuntu versions you mention. They would have the newer versions of XFCE4 or at least one of them will. You will have to be careful with what you upgrade.
