Black screen with mouse pointer after Xfce Login in Mint 22 wilma Tuxe

Since two weeks, when I log into an Xfce4 session, the screen stays black, there is only a movable mouse pointer, but no menus, no right click, nothing interactive. Xfce, xfwm and compositor still work, as I can see when I either force another X session from a text cosole, or when I am lucky that one of the workarounds leads to a fully functional working Xfce desktop session.

I already checked system information, xsession erros, contacted my vendor, and posted on Linux Mint forums where it was recommended to follow up in the Xfce forum.

Workarounds that sometimes work:
- The blackscreen issue used to happen erratically first, so a reboot "solved" the problem. One day, rebooting was not enough anymore.
- All other workarounds start with switching to a console session using Ctrl+Alt+F1
- if there is no cursor, type any key,
- log in at the login prompt,
- do one of the following:
    - remove blackbox screensaver: `sudo apt remove blackbox`
    - get all updates: `sudo apt update && sudo apt
    - find, kill, and replace the running desktop session:
        - `ps -aux | grep xfce`
        - `kill -9` (+ the process id of the xfce session)
        - `startx` or `startxfce4` (without lightdm)
- switch back to the graphical desktop session using Ctrl+Alt+F7

The hardware manufacturer, Tuxedo, and a Linux Mint forum user both suggested updating my BIOS, but I fear that I might risk getting even more problems, as I still hope this is just a software/configuration issue.

Alternatively, the hardware manufacturer suggested to switch from their kernel to a default Linux kernel, but I fear I might lose working hardware support, especially for my laptop touchscreen.

System information from `lsb_release -a && uname -a && inxi && sudo lshw -C display && echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE && xfwm4 --version` and diagnosis tool:

Re: Black screen with mouse pointer after Xfce Login in Mint 22 wilma Tuxe

Hello and welcome.

It would be helpful if we can see your log files. Can you post the full contents of ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log after a failed attempt?

Also do you have the xserver-xorg-video-intel package installed?

I have xserver-xorg-video-intel package installed.
I deleted my logs and rebooted, so here are the relevant parts of a black screen session:

Additional observations: The behavior is still erratical: the black screen session that generated the logfiles above, later turned into a functional session when I switched back to it using Ctrl+Alt+F7, but most sessions don't. In rare occasions, after a reboot, everything works well without the black screen issue.

Re: Black screen with mouse pointer after Xfce Login in Mint 22 wilma Tuxe

The logs aren't showing any issues - are they from after the time the issue presented itself?

I have xserver-xorg-video-intel package installed.

I would try uninstalling it and rebooting. The kernel has built-in intel driver support that is more recent than the actual driver package and better supports newer intel graphics chips.

The logs reflect a defunct black screen session. I haven't found any explicit error or warning message anywhere yet.

Thanks for your tip!
I did `sudo apt remove xserver-xorg-video-intel package && sudo reboot` and the next startup had no black screen issue.
I will watch the next reboots and power off + restart, and either follow-up with more details or mark the issue als resolved.

Removing xserver-xorg-video-intel package was not the solution yet.
2 x reboot = no problems;
shut down + turn on again = black screen issue;
shut down + turn on again = no problems;
The issue still occurs erratically.

Do you get any "CPU pipe A FIFO underrun" messages in your journal?

No underrun log entries.

journalctl -S -15m | grep CPU | grep underrun

Today, I did 4 consecutive startup attempts ending in a black screen. After spending about 10 minutes in the console examining my journalctl output, then switching back to Ctrl+Alt+F7, the graphical desktop eventually worked again.

You could try enabling the experimental Intel Xe driver to see if its better. Info on how to do this on Mint can be found here. Also here is the Arch Wiki entry with slightly different instructions.

Note that your chip ID is different s you'll need to use "9a49" instead of "46A6".
