XUBUNTU (Jammy) Menu (min/max/x out) buttons gone

Hello!
I've had an odd problem where the window control buttons in the top right corner are gone and the start menu controls are different vs normal.

Also, I'm having an issue with the mouse pointer easily dropping menus (like I hit the escape button while a menu is open).

Is this fixable? Is it malware or maybe a damaged OS or HDD?

Hello and welcome.

From your brief description of the problem, it sounds like xfwm4 may have crashed. Try opening a terminal window and running the command:

xfwm4 --replace

...to see if that fixes your problem.

If not, can you post back:

• Which version of Xfce you are running

• The contents of ~/.xsession-errors and ~/.xsession-errors.old

• Further explain what you mean by "the start menu controls are different vs normal."

Interestingly, it does fix it sort of with some weird screen draw bugs (black screen where if I drag the window (terminal) it removes black and shows what should be behind it). Also, the command never finishes in terminal. I had to x out of it (gladly I now have that ability! So it's looking like progress!

Try these commands:

xfwm4 --replace &
xfdesktop -Q
xfdesktop &

If this fixes things, log out and back in again to see if the fix is permanent.
