Hi,
Yearslong happy user of XFCE here. First on Xubuntu, now, as the annoyances of Ubuntu overshadow its advantages, on Debian.
I've always used the standard panel layout (single bar at top of window) but recently started customizing. Very happy about the results. However as you can see in the screenshot I bump into the following problem that I can't seem to fix. In the panel on the left I want both applications starters (launchers) and open applications (tasklist). What this leads to however, is that a running application that also has a launcher, shows twice.
In macOS this is covered: when an app is started with a launcher, the launcher icon gets a dot under it, instead of a new icon.
I don't really need the dot, but I would like that launcher icons (for instance) auto-hide when their applications are opened.
Any ideas?

Ok, this has been a feature request a number of times I see now. I would be happy to donate to a fundraiser for someone to pick this up!

Install and use xfce4-docklike-plugin instead of the default window buttons plugin. It has the feature you are looking for.
