Window corrupted with some applications

Hi, I'm using a Xubuntu 24.04 VM on Virtuabox.
I'm having an issue with some applications: right after launch, their window is not shown on the desktop, rather I see some barely visible transparency where they're supposed to be displayed, like a ghost image of the window... and still I see the applications' icon on the bottom task bar.
Then if I drag some visible window onto that area, it gets totally corrupted as shown in this screenshot:

This happens only with some specific applications (e.g. GHex, mkusb), and each time I try to launch them.
Here is xfwm4 -V output:
