Can you post the contents of your ~/.xsession-errors log file?
What does the following return:
ps -ef | grep -i desktopAnd can you also create a second user account on your computer, log into that account and see if the problem is replicated there as well?

Thanks for reply.
I find Xfce remarkably fast and configurable on my 32 bit machine.
On setting up a second user , ergo4uk , if I try to switch user the system does not allow change of user but crashes out and I need enter start xfce4 to reboot from a black screen.
Other ( Related?) Background
After a recent extensive total update the system bootup ends with a black screen asking for Login and password, and then there is a need to advance by using startxfce4 in order to reach the standard grey desktop.

Sounds like a problem with the display manager. Assuming it was lightdm, what does the following return?
sudo systemctl --no-pager status lightdm.servicesetting up a second user , ergo4uk , if I try to switch user the system does not allow change of user but crashes out and I need enter start xfce4 to reboot from a black screen.
Probably because the display manager isn't working properly.
Reboot your computer and at the black login screen, log in as ergo4uk, start Xfce manualyl (startxfce4) and see if changing the background works. If not, then run the following commands (debug mode):
xfdesktop -Q
xfdesktop -e...try changing the wallpaper and post back the output that is displayed in the terminal window.

see below output. Basically no change to wallpapers. If I select different wallpapers on the desktop , picture or solid colour, the wallpaper on the unlock screen changes perfectly but disappears on entering password.....

Lets deal with the background issue first.
Reboot your computer. Log in at the black screen. Then enter the following command:
mv ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-desktop.xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-desktop.xml.bak...this will reset the background settings to default - so you will need to re-set them.
Then start Xfce again:
startxfce4Check to see if the background wallpaper is working again.
If not, lets see again:
xfconf-query -c xfce4-desktop -lv...and the contents of ~/.xsession-errors.

i also tried the the move command after startxfce and then on the xfce terminal and it seemed to accept it there . but no change to wallpaper. using startxfce4 again on the terminal gave perhaps predictably,

Something is really odd here. Your xfdesktop debug shows it trying to set the wallpaper:

...but the output of the previous command doesn't show it saved anywhere.
Can you post the output of:
ls -al ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xmlLets try the rename again, this time after you reboot and login as ergo3uk and before startxfce4:
ps -ef | grep dm
cd ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml
mv xfce4-desktop.xml xfce4-desktop.xml.bakThen run startxfce4. When Xfce is running, open a terminal window, run the command:
xrandr...and post the output of that command.
As a second test, reboot and at the login screen, login as ergo4uk, then:
startxfce4...and see if the wallpaper works.

Can you see if this command helps?
xfconf-query -c xfce4-desktop -p /backdrop/screen0/monitordefault/workspace-1/last-image -t string -s /usr/share/backgrounds/white_dusk.jpg --createIf the background doesn't change, then again do:
xfdesktop -Q
xfdesktop -e...and post back debug output.
And then one more time:
xfconf-query -c xfce4-desktop -lvMark solved threads as [SOLVED] to make it easier for others to find solutions.

Where is it getting this from if it doesn't exist in the config file? This is really strange.
Are you running any of these commands as root or just your user account?
Can you post back the output of:
idAlso, on the Desktop Settings > Background dialog where you select the wallpaper, in the Style dropdown, what is it set to?
And can you change it to "Zoomed" and see if that helps?

And can you change it to "Zoomed" and see if that helps?
When I installed from DVD I had Default user account name ergo3uk and I think I used ergo3uk also for the Root user name , both with separate passwords. I never use or have had to use the Root account. Sometimes I appear to get ergo3uk/ergo3uk/... I would have been better to have different names.....

I think the DBG entry lines were perhaps a cut and paste error on my part as I was copying and pasting from terminal to notes and them to the forum as I kept getting logged out after posting but before submit....

service lightdm status...and with root privileges, can you access and post back the contents of /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log and /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log?

THE FIRST ONE WORKED for Extraterrain... It still does not allow changing the Desktop to anything else with the proviso that still if I make a full colour or scene choice from folder Backgrounds or folder xfce , on opening up locked screen the choice is there. I tried the second conf-query out of interest ; this had no ( then not necessary) effect.
Can I get to the folders Backgrounds or xfce? ( perhaps not advisable? ; I have accessed my pictures folder and successfully chosen a stretched photo for the desktop but presently only on exiting the lock screen does the change appear, ergo work perfectly.
We are getting there !

Just cold rebooted the computer and glad to say it is accepting the terrain.jpg as the wallpaper . So a workaround is to insert the desired file in your solution. It would be good if the choice worked not just for the unlock screen. Getting there.

THE FIRST ONE WORKED for Extraterrain...
Okay, so this must be a bug in xfdesktop 4.20. Here is a list of current xfdesktop wallpaper/backdrop bugs. Many are related to wayland, so I'm not sure why its impacting you. For a proper fix, you will need to wait.
As a workaround, you can use that command to set the wallpaper. You can even create a thunar custom action so when you right click on an image file in thunar, you will have an option to set that image as wallpaper.
With respect to lightdm, it looks like its running but not displaying on your screen. Since lightdm isn't an Xfce product (and I'm not that familiar with it), you might want to reach out to the MXLinux forums for assistance to get it working properly.
