Two icons for package-update-indicator in XFCE 4.20 (Debian 13.1) ...

Hi to everyone.  I'm hoping someone can help.  Right now, I have two icons in my panel for package-update-indicator.

I just need one.  How do I make it so that there is just one icon, and not two?  Thanks; I appreciate it.  I hope to resolve this.

You may have both the Indicator Plugin and the Status Notifier plugin installed in the panel. I would remove the indicator Plugin.

I do not see either in my list of items in the panel preferences.   sad

You don't have a system tray?

Lets start with your Xfce4 and Xfce4-panel versions. Also what distro do you have installed and what is this package-update-indicator?

Here is a picture.  It may help.  Link: https://imgur.com/a/BoTR9Xm

Also, I have Debian 13.1 XFCE installed.  I am on XFCE 4.20.

Here is a link about "package-update-indicator": https://manpages.debian.org/trixie/pack … .1.en.html

I sincerely hope this is enough to help you guide me further.  Thanks.

Re: Two icons for package-update-indicator in XFCE 4.20 (Debian 13.1) ...

I assume it's the two center icons you referring to. Hard to see but they look like two different icons in different states. Is it possible you have the application starting twice?

I looked at the package and what it requires as dependencies and I would not use it myself. Packagekit it required to install it and there have been some reports of it causing some issues. Also, it requires Gnome software which could also bring in some other issues/complications. I would stick with Synaptic(graphical or just apt on the command line.

I realize this doesn't help you. You could try and pkill the app then restart it from the terminal and see if t reports anything. You may get a hint.

Thanks for replying.  I just uninstalled the application.  If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm open to trying this again.  Thanks again.

Re: Two icons for package-update-indicator in XFCE 4.20 (Debian 13.1) ...

If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm open to trying this again.

I remember having had this issue twice on OpenSUSE Leap 15.6.

Right click on Panel, then choose Panel Preferences, then click on Items.
The item list should contain a Status Tray Plugin.  Double click the entry -> Status Tray Items dialogue opens.

This dialogue has two sections: Status Notifiers and Systray Icons.

Check what is under Known Items.

On my system, org.guido-berhoerster.code.package-update-indicator is only listed only under Status Notifiers, but not under Systray Icons.

I had it listed twice in Status Notifiers and once under Systrai Icons.

What helped in my case was to click on Clear Known Items at the bottom.  Do this for both sections and see if this helps.  The list is tidied up and automatically rebuilt, so no worries.

(I had this happen a second time where this approach did not work, but somehow magically disappeared; the only thing I also did was to click on Request symbolic icons to change the icons states).

Version of package-update-indicator (via `rpm -qa --last | grep package-update`):
package-update-indicator-9-bp156.3.3.1.x86_64 Thu Feb 27 15:51:52 2025

Thanks for replying and trying to help.  I appreciate it.  Before I uninstalled package-update-indicator, I did try playing around with the panel settings, and did pretty much what you described.  One of the icons actually disappeared, too, and I tried playing with the "symbolic icons" setting, as well.  But both icons eventually reappeared, and that was it for me.  Not sure what else I can do.  I did, however, try uninstalling unattended-upgrades on a whim (even though I knew it likely wouldn't help), and that still didn't work.  I have reinstalled unattended-upgrades and (once again) uninstalled package-update-indicator.  Looks like this whole thing is a bug.  At this point, I'm done, but perhaps one of the more "experienced" hands with XFCE itself (maybe one of the developers) can jump in here?  Thanks again.
