Configuring hotkeys and keyboard layouts

Good afternoon!
Please tell me how to configure the system so that switching the keyboard layout from one input source to another can be done in two different ways:

  • using the `Alt + Shift` combination

  • using the single `Pause/Break` key

?

By modifying `/etc/default/keyboard`, I can only set the switch to "Alt + Shift", but I couldn't do it with a single key.

I'm also interested in how to specify in the system that the `NumLock` key must be enabled when logging in (regardless of its status when logging out of the previous session).

an edit

[Seat:*]
greeter-setup-script=/user/bin/numlockx on

Greetings

Thanks!

Maybe someone can also tell me how to set an additional switch from one layout to another using a dedicated key?

Re: Configuring hotkeys and keyboard layouts

You could install ibus if not already installed and have it start on login. You should get it show up in the system tray. If you right click on it and select preferences you will see the hotkey section as well as profiles etc. Should be self explanatory.

Perhaps due to a conflict with the default keyboard layout switch, iBus isn't working properly. The layout change indicator appears in the tray, but the actual layout doesn't change.

Re: Configuring hotkeys and keyboard layouts

Interesting?? I just tried to set it up and added en(US) and gb(GB). I could see the switch happen on screen when I hit Super|Space but the systray doesn't change, neither does the input method. I rebooted to see if it's just a redstart issue but I loss the previous set up. I'm not sure what's happening but there is a xfce4 panel plugin but I've never tried it.
